Who Put the “7” in Seven Mountains? – presented by Paul Fagley, Mifflin County Historical Society

They are an area of rugged natural beauty, with many square miles of heavily forested mountains. It contains many areas of unique beauty, such as Bear Meadows, Alan Seeger, and Poe Valley. Crossed by US Route 322 roughly in the middle, the “Seven Mountains” is a formidable barrier between north and south in the geographic center of the state. Mixed in with the natural beauty is the romance and mystique of the Seven Mountains. But, can you name the “seven” mountains? The answer is not as easy as it seems. This program is a blend of geology, geography, folklore, romance, and history, woven together to try to discover the answer to that ultimate question, and includes a history of the highway across the mountains.

Paul Fagley is a retired park ranger and an environmental education specialist at Greenwood Furnace State Park. He has authored several papers on central PA history including the origins Pennsylvania’s industry and is a board member of Mifflin County Historical Society.
